Short answer: I do not believe him. Studied Buddhist teachings deeply for ten years, especially Tibetan Buddhism, but also other traditions, and I never, never, met with these demands. The Buddha is said to have eaten a grain of rice each day, hemp, before his enlightenment. The Buddha and Buddhism generally discouraged (banned in the case of monks and nuns), the use of any substance that alters or whether alcohol, drugs or other thing. Buddhists do not strive to "mystical experiences" without Yet all is seeing the world clearly and without hindrance as it is. Any type of psychotropic substance would be a serious obstacle. And by the way, "Lama" does not mean "priest", meaning "teacher."
