What are your thoughts on (the disgusting, sexist) Deuteronomy 22:28-29?
~ Deuteronomy 22:28-29 (New International Version) 28 If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not betrothed, and rape are discovered, they must pay the girl's father fifty shekels of silver 29. He has to marry the girl, raped her. He can never divorce her as long as you live.
Unlike what it may seem, this law was made with the victim, welfare in mind. In Jewish culture (as in most cultures the time) a woman who had lost her virginity would have been a much harder time find a man to marry. Note that bethrothal mentioned in verse 28, which implies that the problem is the law. Marriage at the time was not primarily about feelings of love meant, among other things, the financial stability of the woman in question. If the rapist were forced to marry her, she do not worry about losing financial stability.
