How do I make silver/gold pendants that are outlines or solid shapes?
This question is for jewelry makers/experts. So if I wanted to make a pendant out of silver or gold, what kind of machine would be best? The things I have in mind are pendants that are shapes, and either outlines of the shapes or the solid shape. What kind of tools/machine would I need, and how do I go about making these pendants? Thank you in advance!!
Kind of a complicated question…easy to answer…not easy to accomplish…
To cut out a shape…most jewelers use “jeweler saws”. There are many sites where you can purchase these. Here is a site I use… http://www.ottofrei.com/store/home.php?cat=1143
(Don’t forget to purchase saw blades too…size 0/2 is a good size to start with. Cuts 20-22 gauge metal) You will also need a lubricant such as beeswax for the blade.
You could also use a hydraulic press with a pancake die…or a hydraulic press with an embossing die and then cut out with a jewelers saw. Hydraulic presses can be very dangerous and you must take adequate precautions when using this expensive machine.
For thin gauge metal (20 gauge or thinner), you could use some metal shears…such as Joyce Chen brand.
There are also some websites where you can purchase sterling silver shapes that are already cut out…surf for “sterling silver blanks”
You could also use metal clay…there are video’s all over the web for this.

Your best bet would be to either take a class at a local college or at least purchase a book or search the web for “how to” video’s.
