One of the best Buddhist temples in Southeast Asia, Kek Lok Si temple stands majestically on a hill in Air Itam. Known as "The Hall of Supreme Bliss "Which was built in the beautiful amphitheater facture''Pagode''Dix thousand Buddha. It took more than 20 years to build and features gardens, a turtle pond, shrines and beautiful Buddhist sculptures.
The church has several prayer halls, pagodas, towers and almost all structures typical of another temple that you may think, in different styles of Thai Burma to China.
It is known that the Kek Lok Si project was inspired by the chief monk Goddess of Mercy Temple in Pitt Street. With support from the representative of China Consulate in Penang, the project received the sanction of the Manchu Emperor Kuang Hsi, who given a tablet and gift of 70,000 volumes of Buddhist sutras Imperial edition.
The main attractions that dominate the landscape of mountain pagoda 7 floors, the huge bronze statue of the Goddess of Mercy, Kwan Yin – a popular deity in Penang. For a photo of the statue of Kuan Yin, walk around the room and inclined to take a lift hill. The air lift slope is more like trams and could put you at a cost of RM2 each way.
Pagoda 7 floors or "Pagoda of 10,000 Buddha" is another interesting attraction. This pagoda combines a Chinese octagonal base with an intermediate level of Thai style and a crown Burma, because the temple cover two Mahayana and Theravada Buddhism. It is in the new prayer hall where you pay a "voluntary" donation of RM2.
Kek Lok Si temple land is sacred pond and beautiful gardens. One of the most famous are, of course, "The pond Liberation" (Holy terrapin). Tradition China believes that the turtle is a symbol of longevity, strength and endurance. It is an act of spiritual liberation when a turtle is captured and published in the pond.
